Background: Overuse of radiological procedures has become a significant problem. Choosing wisely is a campaign based on scientific evidence which has developed recommendations on avoiding unnecessary examinations and treatment. When implementing new evidence, research shows that better results are achieved when different strategies are combined, and active measures are better than passive measures. Purpose: The main purpose of this project was to investigate the usefulness for GPs of the radiological recommendation in the Norwegian Choosing Wisely campaign. Additionally, on the basis of this investigation and in light of existing research on implementation strategies, suggestions for the implementation of Choosing Wisely are made. Method: This project used a quantitative survey and a qualitative interview. The participants are GPs. 40 GP answered the survey, and three of them participated in a group interview about their experience with the campaign. Results: Over a period of four weeks, the four radiological recommendations from the campaign were relevant in a total of 235 patient consultations. In half of the consultations the GPs found the recommendations to be useful. In the qualitative interview the GPs elaborated on how they use the recommendations and highlighted the need to inform the general public about the recommendations. Conclusion: This study is based on a small and selective sample. Nevertheless, the findings support the notion that the radiological recommendations in Choosing Wisely can help GPs in Norway avoid radiological examinations that are not helpful for their patients. To implement the recommendations education and feedback to GPs on their practice may be useful. Keywords: Overdiagnostics, Diagnostic imaging, Choose wisely, Quality improvement
