Moderskap, traume og tilknytning - en lesning av Sandra Lillebøs Tingenes tilstand (2020)

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven er en lesning av Sandra Lillebøs roman Tingenes tilstand (2020), hennes to tidligere verk er diktsamlinger. Romanens førstepersonsforteller, Sandra, forteller sin historie om å vokse opp med en psykisk syk mor. Fra et pårørendeperspektiv viser Sandra hvordan påkjenningen av mors sykdom fører til beslutningen om å bryte kontakt med mor, der bruddet fremstilles som en litterær frigjøringsprosess. Som problemstilling undersøker jeg hvordan psykisk sykdom presenteres som et relasjonelt problem i Tingenes tilstand. For å konkretisere problemstillingen stiller jeg tre forskningsspørsmål: Hvordan fremstilles moderskap? Hvordan fremstilles traumet i tekstens fortellerteknikk? Hvilken betydning får pårørendeperspektivet for historien? I min lesning undersøker jeg betydningen av romanens fragmenterte oppbygning. For å forstå den kompliserte fortellerteknikken anvender jeg Gérard Genettes narratologiske analysevektøy, Discours du récit og Unni Langås traumeteoretiske litteraturforskning, Traumets betydning i norsk samtids-litteratur. Ved å lese romanen i lys av narratologisk og traumeteoretisk litteraturforskning argumenterer jeg for hvordan fortellerteknikken i Tingenes tilstand er et uttrykk for traumets effekt i nåtid. Jeg anvender hovedsakelig den feministiske filosofen Élisabeth Badinters historiske undersøkelse av moderskapet for å vise hvordan Sandras historie fremstiller ulike moderskapsdiskurser, der psykisk sykdom og moderskapet fremstilles som uforenelige. Romanen fremstiller moderskapet som arvelig på lik linje som psykisk sykdom, noe som truer Sandras eget moderskap. Min lesning viser jeg hvordan romanen bruker John Bowlbys tilknytningsteori som forklaringsmodell for å forstå hvordan fraværet av en trygg base i barndommen problematiserer Sandras senere relasjoner. Ved å analysere Sandras historie ut ifra et pårørendeperspektiv viser jeg hvordan traumatiske minner om mor hjemsøker henne i nåtiden og problematiserer hennes moderskap.

This MA thesis is a study of Sandra Lillebø’s debut novel Tingenes tilstand (2020), her previous works being poetry collections. The novel’s first-person narrator, Sandra, tells the story of growing up with a mentally ill mother. With the next of kin perspective Sandra shows how the strain of her mother’s illness leads to the decision to break ties with her mother, where the breakup is presented as a literary process of liberation. In this thesis I analyse how mental illness is presented as a relational problem in Tingenes tilstand. To contextualize this question, I ask three research questions: How is motherhood portrayed? How is trauma presented in the narrative technique? What significance does the next of kin perspective have for the story? The novel presents a fragmented and incoherent story. To understand the complex narrative, I use Gérard Genette's narratology, Discours du récit, and Unni Langås' trauma theoretical literary research, Traumets betydning i norsk samtidslitteratur. By reading the novel with the use of narratological and trauma theoretical literary research, I argue that Tingenes tilstand portrays the mother's mental illness as a relational problem, where the narrator's present is marked by the unresolved traumas of the past. Using the feminist philosopher Élisabeth Badinter’s exploration of motherhood, I show how Sandra's story presents various discourses on motherhood, in which mental illness and motherhood are portrayed as incompatible. I examine how the novel portrays motherhood as hereditary in the same way as mental illness and how this idea threatens Sandra's own motherhood. Furthermore, I examine how the novel uses John Bowlby's attachment theory as an explanatory model for how the absence of a safe base in Sandra’s childhood complicates her later relationships. By analysing Sandra's experiences growing up with a mentally ill mother from a next of kin perspective, I show how the traumatic memories of her distant mother haunt her in the present and complicate her own motherhood.
