Estetikk, klasse og kjønn: Alma Knudsens «Min lille Bog», Minder og Stemninger af en Tjenestepige (1884)

Abstract

Denne avhandlingen tar for seg Alma Knudsens «Min lille Bog». Minder og Stemninger af en Tjenestepige (1884). Diktsamlingen vakte stor oppsikt da den ble utgitt, men har ikke vært gjenstand for en omfattende litteraturvitenskapelig undersøkelse tidligere. Denne avhandlingen tar for seg to ulike aspekter ved diktsamlingen. Det første aspektet er utgivernes og anmeldernes estetiske vurderinger av Min lille Bog. Jeg undersøker hvordan den romantiske estetikkens tanker om dikterens naturgitte genialitet påvirket oppfatningen av den udannete tjenestepikens diktning på 1880-tallet. Det andre aspektet er diktene i Min lille Bog. Jeg nærleser fem av diktene, i lys av den romantiske estetikken. Lesningene undersøker hvilket syn på estetikk, skjønnhet, dikterrollen, klasse og kjønn som kommer til uttrykk gjennom diktene. Jeg tar for meg både bruddmomenter og kontinuitetsmomenter i forhold til den romantiske estetikken. Avhandlingen er strukturert slik at informasjon om diktsamlingen, forfatteren, tjenestepikeyrket og resepsjonen av Min lille Bog kommer først. Etter dette gjør jeg rede for den estetikkhistoriske teorien som danner bakteppet for forståelsen av både resepsjonen og diktene i Min lille Bog. Denne delen er delt i to. Først gjør jeg rede for den tyske romantiske estetikken som påvirket norsk kulturliv i lang tid. Her har jeg valgt utdrag fra estetikken til Kant, Schiller, Schlegel og Hegel. I den andre delen gjør jeg rede for relevant norsk estetikk fra 1800-tallet, særlig ved å følge linjen fra den tyske romantikken til Henrik Wergelands estetikk. Resten av avhandlingen er nærlesning av resepsjonen av Min lille Bog og fem utvalgte dikt fra samlingen. Funnene mine er for det første at diktsamlingen og resepsjonen av den viser at en arbeiderkvinne kunne bli tolket som et slags naturgeni på slutten på 1800-tallet, og at man ignorerte det som kunne bryte med denne forståelsen. For det andre viser materialet hvor viktig forståelsen av forfatterens sosiale identitet er for forståelsen av diktene hennes. For det tredje er diktsamlingen minst like interessant i et klasseperspektiv, som i et kjønnsperspektiv. For det fjerde er det skjønnhet Knudsen er mest opptatt av, og en lengsel etter skjønnhet er motivasjonen for at hun dikter.

This thesis is about Alma Knudsen’s «Min lille Bog». Minder og Stemninger af en Tjenestepige (1884). This collection of poems attracted a great deal of attention when published but has not been the subject of any comprehensive literary study before. The thesis addresses two different aspects of the collection. The first aspect is the aesthetic assessments of Min lille Bog made by the publishers and the reviewers of the book. I examine how the thoughts from the romantic aesthetics about the poet’s natural genius influenced the perception of the uneducated housemaid’s poetry in the 1880s. The second aspect is the poems in Min lille Bog. I perform a reading of five chosen poems, in light of the romantic aesthetics. The readings examine what views on aesthetics, beauty, the role of the poet, class and gender that are expressed through the poems. I consider both the parts that continue and break with the romantic aesthetics. The thesis is structured with the information about the poetry collection, the author, the life of a housemaid, and the reception of Min lille Bog first. After this, I explain the historical aesthetical theory that makes the background for understanding both the reception of and the poems in Min lille Bog. This part is divided in two. First, I explain the German romantic aesthetics that influenced Norwegian cultural life for a long time. For this part I have chosen excerpts from the aesthetics of Kant, Schiller, Schlegel and Hegel. In the second part, I explain relevant Norwegian aesthetics from the 19th century, especially by following the line from the German romanticism to Henrik Wergeland’s aesthetics. The rest of the thesis is a reading of the reception of Min lille Bog and five selected poems from the collection. My findings are, first, that the collection of poems and the receptions of it show that a working-class woman could be interpreted as a kind of natural genius at the end of the 19th century, and that whatever threatened this understanding was ignored. The second finding is that the material shows how important the understanding of the author’s social identity is for the ability to understand the poetry she wrote. The third finding is that the poetry collection is as interesting in the perspective of class, as it is in the perspective of gender. The fourth finding is that beauty is what Knudsen is most interested in, and a longing for beauty is what motivates her to write poetry.
