Fosterbarns opplevelse av stigmatisering og hvordan omgivelsene skaper mening rundt deres identitet grunnet deres omsorgssituasjon

Abstract

Sammendrag Formålet med denne masteroppgaven var å få innsikt i hvordan fosterbarn opplever at omgivelsene skaper mening tilknyttet deres identitet grunnet deres omsorgssituasjon. Ved at det finnes svært lite forskning på dette fenomenet i Norge, foreligger det et behov for mer forskning for å gi opplyst kunnskap og for å forstå dette fenomenet. Jeg undersøkte dette fenomenet gjennom forskningsspørsmål om hvordan fosterbarna opplevde at omgivelsene skapte mening rundt deres identitet, hvordan denne meningsskapelsen påvirker dem og om noen av disse opplevelsene kan tyde på at de blir stigmatisert. Denne oppgaven har et kvalitativt design, hvor de empiriske dataene ble innhentet gjennom seks semistrukturerte intervju, hvor de ble analysert ved hjelp av systematisk tekstkondensering. Jeg tok utgangspunkt i faglitteratur om stigmatisering, stereotypier og fordommer, samt identitet, tilhørighet og familie, i tillegg til forskning på stigmatisering av fosterbarn og andre sårbare grupper samt selvstigma. Funnene mine indikerer at fosterbarn er i tvil om å fortelle om sin omsorgssituasjon ved at de er redde for hvilke reaksjoner de får om de forteller, i tillegg til at de kan skamme seg over omsorgssituasjonen deres. Fosterbarna kommer også selv med egne meninger på hvordan omgivelsene bør reagere på deres omsorgssituasjon. Funnene mine indikerer også at fosterbarna blir både stemplet og undervurdert av omgivelsene fordi de er fosterbarn, hvor fosterbarna også kommer med forklaringer på hvorfor omgivelsene stigmatiserer dem, som da er at det er for lite informasjon om fosterbarn. Funnene mine viser også at fosterbarna sliter med å finne sin identitet ved at de er fosterbarn, samt at kjenner på en følelse av manglende tilhørighet. Jeg har konkludert med at det er et behov for økt opplysning om stigmatisering rundt barn som vokser opp i fosterhjem. Abstract The aim of this thesis was to gain insight on how children in foster care experience that their surroundings create meaning associated with their identity due to their foster care situation. As there is a lack of research on this phenomenon in Norway, there is a need for more research to provide enlightened knowledge and to understand this issue. I examined the issue through research questions about how foster children experienced that their surroundings created meaning around their identity, how this creation of meaning affects them and whether any of these experiences may indicate that they are being stigmatized. This thesis has a qualitative design, where the empirical data was obtained through six semi-structured interviews, where the data were analyzed through systematic text condensation. My approaches were based on academic literature about stigmatization, stereotypies and prejudices, as well as identity, sense of belonging and family, in addition to research about stigmatization of children in foster care and other vulnerable groups as well as self-stigma. My findings indicate that foster children are hesitant to tell about their care situation because they are afraid of what reactions they will get if they do tell, in addition to being ashamed of their care situation. The foster children themselves also tells their opinions on how the surroundings should react to their care situation. My findings also indicate that the foster children are both being labeled and underestimated by their surroundings, where the foster children also tell their explanations for why the surroundings stigmatizes them, which is that there is a lack of information about children in foster care. My findings also show that the foster children are struggling to find their identity by being in foster care, and that they feel a sense of lack of belonging. I have concluded that here is a need for increased information about stigmatization surrounding children who grow up in foster care.
