Alcohol abuse is rated to be amongst the top five risks leading to disease and death worldwide. In 2016 approximately 3.3 million people died as a result of serious alcohol abuse. This is a huge problem for societies, especially for the children growing up in households with parental alcoholism. Approximately 90 000 children in Norway has one or two parents who abuses alcohol. Looking at these numbers it is apparent that this is an issue worth addressing. The main focus of this study is to investigate what empirical research says about the resilience in children growing up with alcoholic parents. The findings have been discussed in view of attachment theory and regulation theory as a framework for understanding resilience in children and adolescents growing up with parents who abuse alcohol. This study is a «scoping review», a type of literature study, and it will cover research from 2005 to 2018. The databases used for this study are Web of Science, MEDLINE and PsycINFO. There were in total 19 articles which fulfilled the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The analysis in this thesis presents risk factors and protective factors for resilience in children of parents abusing alcohol. This study identifies factors on biological, individual, parental, familial and social levels. Each level addresses factors which affect children’s physical and psychological development, both positively and negatively. In extension of this I have analysed what research tell about intervention in order prevent negative consequences for the children involved. The following analysis of the literature indicates that more research on familial and social levels is required.en_US
