Abstract

"Forstår du meg egentlig? En mixed method-studie om forståelse og observasjoner vi gjør med personer med demens i musikkterapi, og om disse stemmer overens med brukerperspektivet" utforsker hva ansatte ved et dagsenter for personer med demens og musikkterapeuten observerer i musikkterapien, og sammenligner dette med personen med demens sin egne opplevelse. Problemstillingen for denne studien er: "I hvilken grad vi har en forståelse av personer med demens opplevelse av å delta i en musikkterapigruppe?". Forskningsspørsmålet i studien er: "I hvilken grad er det sammenheng mellom musikkterapeut/ansatt sine observasjoner og deltakerens opplevelse av musikkterapien?" Og "hvilke forskjeller kommer til uttrykk i materialet?". En mixed methods metode ble brukt med et triangulerings design. Dataene ble generert ved hjelp av både "Music in Dementia Assessment Scale (Midas)", som ble fylt ut av de ansatte og musikkterapeut, og semistrukturerte intervju med tre deltakere. Denne kombinasjonen ble utført to ganger. De innsamlede dataene blir presentert som en single case series og er triangulert hver for seg, før det gjennomføres en overordnet triangulering. Selv om dette er et lite studie viser resultatene at det er noe grad av likhet forståelsen for hvordan mennesker med demens opplever å delta i musikkterapigruppene. Resultatene viser også at ved å sammenligne ansatte og musikkterapeut sine besvarelser kommer man ofte nærmere det riktige svaret enn ved bare enten ansatt eller musikkterapeut sin egen observasjon. Det å lytte til personer med demens og gjennomføre intervjuer med dem er ikke bare mulig, men gir også dyp innsikt som denne forskningen har vist. Tverrfaglig samarbeid har vist seg å øke nivået av forståelse av personer med demens. Denne forskningen understreker behovet for mer oppmerksomhet og forskning på personer med demens, musikkterapi og tverrfaglige perspektiver for å videreutvikle og forbedre behandlingen for personer med demens.

"Do you really understand me? A mixed method study of the understanding and observations we do with people with dementia in music therapy, and whether it corresponds with the user perspective" explores the observation of employees in a day care centre for people with dementia and the music therapist, and the experience of people with dementia in music therapy. The research question of this study is, "To what extent do we have an understanding of people with dementia's experiences of participating in a music therapy group?". The sub questions of the study are, "To what extent is there correspondence between the music therapist and employees observations, and the participant's experience of music therapy?" and "What differences are reflected in the material?". A mixed methods method was used with a triangulation design. The data was generated using both the "Music in Dementia Assessment Scale (MiDAS)" which was filled in by the employees and the music therapist, and semi-structured interviews with the three participants. This combination was carried out twice. The collected data is presented as a single case series and are triangulated separately, before there is an overarching triangulation. Though this is a small study, the results show that there are some correspondences in the degree of understanding how people with dementia experience participation in a music therapy group. Also the results show that by comparing their results, the non-music therapy staff and the music therapist often get closer to the correct answer than they do with only their own observations. Listening to people with dementia, and conducting interviews with them is not only possible, but also provides deep insight, as this research has shown. Interdisciplinary collaboration has proven to increase the level of understanding people with dementia. This research highlights the need for more attention and research in people with dementia, music therapy and compliance perspectives to further develop and improve care for people with dementia.
