Scenekunstprodusenten - Ei undersøking av scenekunstprodusenten si rolle i det frie feltet, med institusjonen som samanlikningsgrunnlag

Abstract

In this master's thesis, I will examine the role of the producer in the free field of theatre, with the theatre institution as a basis of comparison. I have worked with the question: can you define the performing arts producer's tasks and role? The free field is often very flowing, and the tasks of a producer will vary from project to project. In this thesis, I will examine what a performing arts producer is or can be. In addition, what type of tasks a producer have or can have. To form a good picture of what the producer's task are I have made an organized list of areas often assigned in the free field of theatre production. These areas are leadership, planning, finances, network and marketing. During the work with this thesis, it became clear to me that it is possible and important to separate the producer's tasks and the producer's role. One can understand and describe the producer in two ways: either as the tasks that must be completed, or as the person who does these tasks. If the producer's work were described as a role" in connection with theatre production, the producer would become more defined as an employee/member on the same line as the artist and other co- workers. In the examination of the producer's tasks, I have used qualitative interviews with three producers working in the free field. In addition to the leader of Proscen, the production manager at DNS, and manager Linda Børnes. Through comparisons and systematization of different tasks and roles of the producer, I want to make a better and bigger picture of what the practical and actual situation for the producer is in the performing arts. I will also discuss how cultural politics sets limits around theatre production, and introduce the free field and the theatre institution. In relation with the two different ways of making theatre, I will look at how they organize theatre production and how each of them distributed a producer's tasks. I argue that the organizational model and awareness around organizing a theatre production will be important, not only for the producer, but for the entire performing arts field. In the conclusion, I argue that the understanding of the producer's role will give a more clear definition of the producer's work in the performing arts field. In addition, will different roles give different positions and involvement. The producer should be seen as a key role in theatre production, and should be involved from the beginning of the production and contribute with the planning and implementation.

I denne masteroppgåva undersøkjer eg scenekunstprodusenten si rolle i det frie feltet, med teaterinstitusjonen som samanlikningsgrunnlag. Det frie feltet kan ofte vere flytande, både i høve til organisering og rollefordeling, det vil då kunne vere vanskeleg å fastsette produsenten sine arbeidsoppgåver. Eg vil med denne oppgåva undersøkje kva ein scenekunstprodusent er eller kan vere, samt kva type arbeidsoppgåver ein produsent har eller kan ha. For å kunne beskrive og diskutere produsenten i det frie feltet har eg også valt å kartlegge, samt gje ei samanlikning av korleis produsentoppgåvene vert ivaretatt ved ein teaterinstitusjon. Ei samanlikning av korleis produksjonsorganisering føregår i institusjonen og i det frie feltet, vil kunne gje eit breiare perspektiv og gje ei betre forståing for korleis produsentoppgåver kan vert ivaretatt og organisert. For å organisere og samanlikne produsentoppgåvene laga eg ei systematisk liste over kva arbeidsområder eg meiner er sentrale i scenekunstprodusenten sitt arbeid. Desse punkta er: leiing, planlegging, økonomi, nettverk og marknadsføring. I denne undersøkinga av produsenten sine arbeidsoppgåver valte eg å bruke kvalitative intervju med tre produsentar som arbeider i det frie feltet. I tillegg har eg hatt samtalar med dagleg leiar av Proscen, produsent Linda Børnes, og produksjonssjef ved DNS. Gjennom samanlikning og systematisering av produsenten sine arbeidsoppgåver og rolle, ønskjer eg å skape eit større og betre bilete av kva den praktiske og faktiske situasjonen er for scenekunstprodusenten i det frie feltet. Eg vil også diskutere korleis kulturpolitikk set rammar kring scenekunstproduksjon, samt gje ei innføring av det frie feltet og teaterinstitusjon. I samanheng med korleis desse to felta organiserer scenekunstproduksjon, vil eg sjå på korleis produsentoppgåvene vert ivaretatt høvesvis det frie feltet og institusjonen. Eg argumenterer for at organiseringsmodell og bevisstskap rundt organisering av teaterproduksjon er viktig, ikkje berre for produsenten, men også generelt for det frie feltet. Etter kvart i løpet av arbeidet med oppgåva, vart det klart for meg at det er mogleg og viktig å skilje mellom produsentoppgåver og produsentrolla. Dels er det to ulike måtar å forstå og beskrive ein produsent: anten som arbeidsoppgåver som må verte utført, eller den person som utfører desse arbeidsoppgåvene. Samstundes vart det klart for meg at denne distinksjonen kanskje og har tyding i høve til korleis ein ser på produsenten, og kva status ho har i scenekunstproduksjon. Eg ser også på korleis rolleforståing heng saman med organisering og organisasjonsforståing i scenekunstproduksjon. Ulike roller gjev ulik status og involvering i prosjekt, eg diskuterer difor viktigheita av å vere bevisst organisering og prosjektorganisering for å forstå produsentrolla. I min avsluttande konklusjon diskuterer eg produsentrolla med utgangspunkt i at produsenten bør verte ein likestilt medarbeidar i scenekunstproduksjon.
