Abstract
In this paper I will analyze the role played by food in the Italian movies and its role in the society. In the first part of the thesis, the analysis will be mostly focused on a linguistic overview on the language of cinema and its linguistic features. The second part will analyse the role of food in anthropology and the influences in shaping the past and the current eating lifestyle. A third part will be dedicated to the analysis of Italian movie making, from the Fascist age until the current years, providing an overview of the different styles and personalities who shaped the art of filmmaking in Italy. The last part of the paper will focus on the joint analysis of the Italian society, the role of the food and their representation in the Italian movies. The analysis will cover some of the major works of art, depicting the Italian society there represented, the role of men and women in the society of the time and how the food is depicted. A side chapter has been added in order to compare the role of food in foreign movies, though the chapter do not take into consideration any linguistic analysis, but just the movies in itself and which part the food plays in the different movies. The aim of the analysis is to show how food has been always a constant representation in Italian art -unlike foreign movies - and how the role of the food changed throughout the years, from simple element of the scene to conveying deeper significances
