This paper discuss the concepts of shame and guilt, and briefly present different perspectives regarding these concepts. There are essentially differences between shame and guilt, and the main difference is the individuals experience of the emotions. Both are self- conscious and moral emotions, shame is related to the individuals self and guilt is connected to the individuals behaviour. Shame and guilt both protect and sometimes prevent the human in its self-realisation. The main focus in this paper is shame and guilt as emotions in depression, particularly shame plays an essential role in depression. Further, the paper will describe how shame comes to expression and can be a challenge in therapy, for both client and therapist.en_US
