A conceptualization of the new urban masses in Africa - a critical discussion of the "Lumpenproletariat"

Abstract

In this paper we will attempt to conceptualize the explosive growth of a "lumpenproletariat" - a slum-dwelling, unproductive workforce in the informal sector - in African cities, in light of democratization. We will explore possibilities and limitations in terms of democratization, related to this group. Our approach will be genealogical, first establishing a theory of the African state in order to situate this group in a concrete social formation. We will proceed with an investigation into different conceptualizations of the political potential of this category. On the background of these analyses it seems to us that a deconstruction of the concept "lumpenproletariat" will be necessary if posing the question of democratic reform within these social formations. Methodologically we will rely on Michel Foucault. We will base the theory of the state on Mahmood Mamdani. Mike Davis will be used in order to get a perspective on the scale of the phenomena. In relation to the different conceptualizations Karl Marx, Georges Bataille, Hannah Arendt, Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri will be discussed. Towards the end Frantz Fanon and Peter Worsely will be brought in, opening for other perspectives.

I denne oppgaven vil vi forsøke konseptualisere den eksplosive veksten av et "lumpenproletariat" - en uformell, uproduktiv slumbefolkning - i Afrikanske byer i lys av en demokratiseringsproblematikk. Vi vil utforske hvilke muligheter og begrensninger for demokratisering denne hurtige voksende gruppen innebærer. Vi vil gå frem på en genealogisk måte ved først å etablere en teori om den Afrikanske staten, for slik å kunne plassere denne gruppen i en konkret samfunnsformasjon. Vi vil videre se på ulike konseptualiseringer av denne kategoriens politiske potensial. På bakgrunn av disse analysene vil det for oss komme til å se ut som en dekonstruksjon av begrepet "lumpenproletariat" vil være nødvendig, for å kunne sette spørsmålet om demokratisk reform på dagsorden innen disse samfunnsformasjonene. Metodologisk vil vi støtte oss til Michel Foucault. Vi vil basere statsteorien på Mahmood Mamdani. Mike Davis vil vi bruke for å få et perspektiv på dimensjonene av fenomenet. I forhold til ulike konseptualiseringer vil vi dra veksler på analyser av Karl Marx, Georges Bataille, Hannah Arendt, samt Michael Hardt og Antonio Negri. Mot slutten vil vi trekke inn Frantz Fanon og Peter Worsely for å kunne åpne for andre perspektiver.
