This paper is an attempt to study computer game conversation as a sociolinguistic genre. In this paper, genre analytic theory is used in addition to discourse analytic theory to shed light on a genre that by and large has remained untouched by the sociolinguistic studies. The paper is constituted by five chapters. Chapter 1 describes the background and the main purpose the paper. Chapter 2 is an introductory chapter that deals in computer games in general as well as the computer game used in this study. The theoretical foundation for the paper, which consists of genre- and discourse analytic theory and methodology, is introduced in chapter 3. In chapter 4, the main analysis of the source material is carried out with regard to three different analytical approaches: linguistic, psychological and sociological. Chapter 5 contains a conclusion and a summary of the paper's findings. The source material for this paper consists of a recording of three informants playing the online multiplayer game League of Legends", and is about 45 minutes in duration. The language use, utterances and vocabulary of the informants is then studied in order to give answers to some key questions regarding the genre's nature, with the main goal of finding the genre's communicative purpose, genre conventions and structure. The analysis shows that the use of language in computer game conversation is highly focused, is subject to a strict communicative purpose, employs a unique vocabulary and has a progression and structure that is very closely linked to the action and events of the computer game in which the conversation takes place. The conversation can be divided into five phases, and during the expanse of the recording evolves from being informal and unfocused in the earlier phases to in the later phases be centered explicitly in the world of the computer game itself. Computer game conversation has a unique situational context, where the players' physical self is rendered non-essential with regards to context, and replaced by virtual avatars within the game world. Multiplayer games are a fundamentally social activity, and the genre's existence is dependent on the social interaction that takes place when the same computer game is played by multiple people. The ultimate function of the genre is to mediate effective communication between players, in order to give them the greatest chance possible of winning the game, and the discourse used is greatly affected by this.en_US
