Konstruksjonen av en islamsk trussel - Et studie av kontrajihadismens historiebruk

Abstract

This master thesis deals with the use of history among counter jihadists. Specifically the use of history in the construction of; a self-image, an image of the enemy, and in construction of a continuity in the alleged conflict between the Muslim world and the West. The research-question concerns "What sort of history-use can one find in counter jihadist publications, and how is the past used to construct both a self-image and an image of the West`s enemy?" The analysis is based on on-line publications such as blogs and articles, as well as traditional publications. The findings are that counter jihadist use history selectively, and only focus on the history events that are suitable to the image that is being constructed. The main history focus is on events where both Muslims and westerners have been involved. Their main focus is to establish a continuous line of events which all are connected; from the prophet Muhammad's days up till today`s terrorist acts, committed in the name of Allah. In the construction of a self-image, early European history is important, and the counter jihadists want to show how the people in the West (Europa and the USA) are connected by a common culture and history. Their use of history is filled with negative, stereotype images of violent Muslims. It constructs a large gap between Muslims and westerners, which can only be filled with mistrust and hatred.

Denne masteroppgaven omhandler historiebruk blant kontrajihadister, og mer spesifikt omhandler den bruken av historie i konstruksjonen av et "vi-fellesskap", et fiendebilde, og kontinuitet i en påstått konflikt mellom den vestlige og den muslimske verden. Oppgaven tar utgangspunkt i problemstillingen; Hvilken historiebruk finner man i kontrajihadistenes publikasjoner, og hvordan brukes fortiden her til å konstruere både en selvforståelse og et fiendebilde til Vesten?". Kildematerialet består både av publikasjoner på blogger og nettsteder, og mer tradisjonell litteratur. Oppgaven avdekker at kontrajihadister bruker historien selektivt, og de bruker bare historiske referanser som passer inn i bildet de ønsker å konstruere. Hovedsakelig har kontrajihadistene fokus på historiske hendelser hvor både muslimer og vestlige er involvert, men historiefokuset tilpasses også publikummet som det er ment for. Det sentrale med den kontrajihadistiske historiebruken er at den konstruerer en kontinuitet i alle historiske konflikter mellom Vesten og islam. De mener at all historisk aggresjon fra muslimer er et bevis på at islam utgjør en ideologisk trussel i dag. Videre bruker kontrajihadistene historien for å vise hvordan den vestlige verden er bundet sammen av felles opphav og kultur. Historiebruken er fylt med negative stereotypier av islam og muslimer, noe som skaper en kløft mellom muslimer og vestlige, en kløft som bare kan bli fylt med mistenkeliggjøring og hat.
