Over the past 20 years, the majority of research has primarily focused on the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions. However, an equally important direction for future research is to address how mindfulness-based interventions actually do work. The object of this theoretical paper is to examine how mindfulness can affect emotion regulation through its impact on the processes of emotion regulation suggested by Gross and colleagues. The paper is based on literature found in relevant databases. Specifically it is proposed that mindfulness affect both antecedent-focused emotion regulation strategies (situation selection, situation modification, attentional deployment and cognitive change) and response-focused emotion regulation strategies (response modulation). It is concluded that mindfulness, in several ways, can serve emotion regulatory purposes. However, as mindfulness is postulated to be working partly through paradoxical mechanisms, the effect on emotion regulation is hypothesised to be more likely to take place if one does not actively seek to regulate ones emotions.en_US
