The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the association between physical and emotional maltreatment during childhood and the consequences for adult romantic relationships from an attachment theoretical perspective. Physical and emotional maltreatment from attachment figures during childhood contribute to the development of an insecure or disorganized attachment style, which impairs the child's emotion regulation and mentalizing ability and contribute to negative internal working models of self and others. The consequences can be vulnerability for an impaired functioning in romantic relationships in adulthood. This impaired functioning is characterized by a lower satisfaction with the relationship, difficulties with intimacy and sexuality, biased perception of partner, impaired conflict management and partner violence. Different adult attachment styles are associated with different problems regarding these relationship variables. Based on attachment theory and empirical data this paper describes how physical and emotional maltreatment during childhood impairs an adaptive development of the attachment system and contributes to different problems in adult romantic relationships. Findings emphasize the value of focusing on attachment in the treatment of children exposed to physical and emotional maltreatment and in therapy with couples in which one, or both, have been exposed to maltreatment.en_US
