| dc.description.abstract | This thesis focuses on the social movement #YoSoy132 that emerged in the Mexican presidential campaign of 2012. It is a study of the interaction of civil society with political institutions, where a movement that was not anticipated by anyone opposed the political system and demanded real change. The case especially focuses on the democratic aspect, as well as human rights. On May 11th 2012, students from the private Iberoamericana University in Mexico City protested against the presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto, representing the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Rapidly, students from all over the country joined the protest and the biggest Mexican social movement in decades erupted. To understand the sociocultural presence that is based in this civil force, it is important to analyze this movement which could represent a space for freedom of expression, functioning as an political awakening" and perhaps give a significant advance in the democratic process in Mexico. The research uses personal opinions of specific chosen profiles to understand how they see the situation in Mexico in regard to the political system, human rights, democracy and social movements. Important questions in this study is how they conceive the democratic situation, why the movement emerged and what impact it had in the student sector in Mexico City. The study concludes that the participants conceive the Mexican democracy as non functional, and that the social movement #YoSoy132 emerged because of the high level of frustration among the students. These frustrations include all aspects of the social and political life investigated in this study, and especially the lack of possibilities regarding political participation in a political system that they characterize as closed. As for the movement's impact, it had a huge influence on the student sector in Mexico City, as well as on the society in general and the electoral process in 2012. | en_US |
