| dc.description.abstract | Colombia is known for having one of the best coffees in the world, and the coffee grower Juan Valdez is the main image of a brand that identifies Colombian coffee in the world, and is also the image of the National Federation of Coffee Growers. However, this image has neglected women who for decades have worked alongside men on coffee farms. Colombia is known for its coffee growing families and small producers. Traditionally, coffee production has been dominated by men and women have been part of the farms as wives, mothers, responsible for reproductive activities, but also participating in the harvest and the subsequent process. This research aims to investigate how the role of women in the coffee industry has changed during the last 50 years (1970-2020) in the Southwest subregion of Antioquia. The purpose is to tell the life stories of women coffee growers from four different municipalities, Jardín, Jericó, Concordia and Urrao, all from the coffee zone in the country. The idea is to highlight the most important events in the history of Colombia, of coffee and of rural women, with a focus on the labor culture in coffee farms and the division of labor by gender. The analysis addresses the gender equity programs developed by the National Federation of Coffee Growers as explanatory elements of the identified transformations. It is important to highlight the history of women to contribute to the visibility of her role and the recognition of her work in coffee cultivation. These are methods of placing the lives and experiences of women at the center of the study, while examining the social and cultural constructions of gender. Through qualitative historical research focused on interviews with women coffee growers, we can discover the changes in the division of labor by gender in coffee production, in order to recognize the work of Colombian women. | |
