This thesis intends to present possible Spanish borrowings and influence in the Muisca language, before it ceased to be spoken. It does so by using the manuscripts written around the 16th century, containing Muisca grammar, vocabulary, and catechisms. We will provide a table of all the Spanish borrowings, and analyze them to find lexical, syntactic, and phonetic influence as a result from its contact with the Spanish language. What the analisis found is that lexical interference was by far the most borrowed linguistic category, with cultural borrowings outweighing basic borrowings. However, we have also found evidence that indicates phonetic interference, and some evidence that points to possible morphological and structural interference. Finally, we present the recent intent to revitalize the language by various communities in Colombia, as various communities have showed recent motivation to revive the muisca language.
