Kunst, kjønn og makt: en representasjonsanalyse av kvinnelige statuer.

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven utforsker representasjonen av kvinnekroppen i kunsten og det gjentakende mønsteret av underrepresentasjon av kvinner i offentlig kunst. Statuer og skulpturer spiller en betydelig rolle i utforming av våre offentlige byrom. Oppgaven har et særlig fokus på tematikken rundt nakne kvinneskulpturer og representasjonen av svarte kvinner på sokkel. Fremstillingen av den nakne kvinnekroppen har historisk sett vært preget av objektivisering og begrensninger i utvalget av kroppstyper og personer som anses som vakre og en ønsker å representere. Gjennom å analysere kunstverkene Dansk Pige (Gerhard Henning, 1955), I Am Queen Mary (Jeannette Ehlers og La Vaughn Belle, 2018), A Sculpture for Mary Wollstonecraft (Maggi Hambling, 2020), og Moren (The Mother) (Tracey Emin, 2022) søker oppgaven å argumentere for hvordan fremstillingen av den nakne kvinnekroppen historisk sett har blitt forankret i et mannlig blikk, og hvordan dette har ført til objektivisering samt begrensninger i utvalget av individer som blir representert i offentlige rom.

Oppgaven tar også for seg kjønnspolitiske spørsmål knyttet til underrepresentasjonen kvinnelige kunstnere opplever på museer og kunstmarkedet. Denne situasjonen er ofte et resultat av strukturelle og institusjonelle barrierer som begrenser kvinnelige kunstneres muligheter til å få verkene sine eksponert og anerkjent på linje med mannlige kunstnere. Gjennom en grundig utforskning av disse temaene søker masteroppgaven å bidra med en dypere forståelse av hvordan representasjonen av kvinnekroppen i offentlig kunst påvirker og formidler oppfatninger om kjønnsroller og likestilling i samfunnet.

This master's thesis explores the representation of the female body in art and the recurring pattern of underrepresentation of women in public art. Statues and sculptures play a significant role in shaping our public spaces. The thesis particularly focuses on the themes surrounding sculptures of nude women and the representation of black women on pedestals. The portrayal of the naked female body has historically been marked by objectification and limitations in the selection of body types and individuals considered beautiful and worthy of representation. By analysing artworks such as Dansk Pige (Gerhard Henning, 1955), I Am Queen Mary (Jeannette Ehlers and La Vaughn Belle, 2018), A Sculpture for Mary Wollstonecraft (Maggi Hambling, 2020), and The Mother (Tracey Emin, 2022), the thesis aims to argue how the representation of the nude female body historically has been rooted by the male gaze, leading to objectification and limitations in the selection of individuals represented in public spaces.

The thesis also addresses gender-political issues related to the underrepresentation female artists experience in museums and the art market. This situation often results from structural and institutional barriers that limit female artists' opportunities to have their works exhibited and recognized on par with male artists. Through a thorough exploration of these themes, the master's thesis seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of how the representation of the female body in public art influences and communicates perceptions about gender roles and equality in society
