Abstract
This paper is an attempt at getting a better understanding of the phenomenon disorganized attachment, and its influence on romantic relationships. The connection between disorganized attachment and fearful attachment in adults is discussed. The authors discuss whether it is reasonable to argue, as Bowlby (1969) does, that attachment in adulthood is a stable process continuing from childhood to later romantic relationships. Attachment theory can help us improve our understanding of couples’ relationship, simultaneously it might be problematic if all actions are explained by the quality of attachment. If disorganized attachment is conceptualized as a psychiatric diagnosis, attachment discourse might contribute to a pathological tendency. This can influence how we think and react to the term attachment. Considering the prevalence of disorganized attachment in the population is 15-30%, it can be assumed that this attachment pattern is a relatively common phenomenon in romantic relationships. An extended understanding of attachment patterns and processes in romantic relationships may have implications for clinical practice.
