Abstract
There is approximately 31 million people of the global population that suffers from a alcohol or drug abuse, so severe that it affects the surroundings. There is a high unrecorded number about how many children who grow up in homes with an alcohol- or drug addicted parent. The aim of this study has been to investigate what empirical research says about children and adolescents experiences and their reflections about how it is to grow up with an drug abusing parent. This study is a scoping review and qualitative research on the topic from 2005 to 2019 has been covered. There were in total 18 articles that covered the aim of this study. The findings shows that this group of children and adolescents have experiences with conflicts, secrecy of the problem and role-conflicts. Children and adolescents resilience, the importance of knowledge about their parents abuse and the support from other, adults that they trusted is addressed as helpful for this group of children. This study shows that it is important that these children receive knowledge about alcohol and drug abuse and support from significant other adults. It is also important that their experiences about growing up in a home with an alcohol- or drug addicted parent are being heard and respected.
