Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between coping strategies and biomarkers of stress- and immun reactions during a stressful military exercise, and validate the method "Recycling immunoaffinity chromotography" in a operative context. The participants were 22 naval officer cadets. The coping styles of the participants were assessed before the exercise by the 30-item General Coping Questionnaire (GCQ-30). Based on their scores on this scale, the participants were allocated to high and low groups for each of the dimensions; task-, emotional-, and avoidant focused coping. Blood samples were sampled two times during the exercise and were analyzed at the Ultramicro Analytical Immunochemistry, Division of bioengeneering and Physical science, National Institute of Health, Bethesda. The present study showed a main effect of time for the biomarkers interleukin (IL)-8, IL-10, substance P (SP), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), neuropeptide Y (NPY) and β-endorphins for the three dimensions. The high task focused group showed highest increase in interleukin (IL)-8, SP, CGRP and β-endorphins. The low task focused group showed the highest increase in NPY. The low task focused group showed increase in vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) from the first to the second sample. The study concluded that the persons characterized by high task focused coping, were struggling with this kind of exercices, and that the method Recycling immunoaffinity chromotography" was valide. Blodprøver ble fortatt to ganger under øvelsen, og ble analysert ved the Ultramicro Analytical Immunochemistry, Division of bioengeneering and Physical science, National Institute of Health, Bethesda.
