How can theatre and performance artists in Norway abide to norwegian copyright law? Copyright regulations and how to apply it on theatre isn’t much of a topic within the artistic or teatrological realms in Norway. The law seems complex, and is worded in a way that can make it seem like the whole field of theatre and performance arts are left out from the law. However, the cpoyright law applies to all art forms and while the law seems clear on the matter, it’s very generalised due to the broad field of arts and intellectual property that it applies to. Questions raised and researched in this thesis are: How can Norwegian artists apply the law on their artistic work, both when using other artists’ copyrighted work and when applying copyright to their own works? For a reader from the field of law, I’m elaborating the variety of artistic methods within theatre, and how these artistic methods are important to understand for someone working with copyright questions within the field of performance arts. For a reader from the field of theatre studies or theatre artists, the thesis will hopefully provide some new knowledge on how to deal with both the copyright of other’s and ones own copyright. I’m also discussing what the alternatives for theatre and performance artists are, and how copyright regulations can be easier to keep track of for performing artists.
