This thesis is about how the suffix -aktig is used in the Norwegian written language bokmål, both in a grammatical and semantic sense. -aktig is an interesting study object because it seems diverse and productive in Norwegian. The research question is what is the general tendency in the use of -aktig in Norwegian and is the suffix productive? The object of study is data material from Aviskorpus bokmål (AKB). This corpus has 4563 unique values with -aktig. The corpus was considered as adequate analysis material for the thesis. The analysis is divided into three separate parts: one grammatical and one semantic, in addition to an analysis of productivity. The focus of the grammatical analysis is to find structures in -aktig’s bases and thus examine which type of derivational suffix -aktig is. This analysis also shows -aktig’s role in the making of new words. The semantic analysis is focused on which semantic categories -aktig’s bases belong to. In addition, the semantic analysis shows the word classes the bases belong to, since the semantic categorization is divided into word classes. Also, the limitations in the formation of new words with -aktig are pointed out. At last, the productivity of -aktig is considered through the elements of the semantic and grammatical analysis, which means the grammatical structures of the bases and the numbers of word classes. Furthermore, the number of hapaxes and the type frequency of -aktig has been looked at. The main result of the analysis is that -aktig is a diverse and productive derivational suffix. The hypothesis that -aktig is a suffixoid or a word is denied through the analysis.
