The Covid-19 pandemic had great consequenses for patients and staff in nursing homes. The aim of this study is to establish knowledge regarding the ethical challenges the staff in nursing homes met during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020/21 by exploring the staffs experiences in this period. The research question was: What ethical challenges did nursing staff in nursing homes experience during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020/21? The overall methodological approach in this project can be described as translational ethics. The study has a bio-ethical approach, here broadly understood as ethical issues related to health and medicine. The study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with seven healthcare workers working in nursing homes during the Covid-19 pandemic. The interviews were analysed by systematic text condensation. The main findings in this study were that the staff in nursing homes experienced ethical challenges when being subjected to the tensions between infection control and other important aspects of taking care of the patients’ needs. The challenges the nursing staff met were found in the worry for infection, in the tension between orders and ethics, in the tension between infection control and professional care, and in the tension between infection control and negative consequences for the patients. To discuss these findings four well-established bioethical principles were used, and philosopher Lisa Tessmans theory of moral failure. It is important to explore this to gain insight into concrete practical ethics and to establish a greater understanding concerning the healthcare workers experiences during the pandemic.
