Title: Complex considerations regarding music therapy and social media This qualitative study explores consent, privacy, and ethics in the context of music therapy and social media. The empirical data is constructed from one focus group interview consisting of 5 participants that lasted 75 minutes. The participants were two music therapy users, two music therapists, and a psychologist. All participants had previous experience with music therapy and social media. The sound recording from the focus group was then processed using naturalistic transcription, systematic text condensation, and thematic analysis. Based on the analysis of the focus group and relevant theory, the discussion is focused upon three main themes: ‘A The process of publishing’, ‘B Consent’ and ‘C Conflicts of interest’. A consistent topic throughout the discussion is how consent for publishing can be as informed and freely given as possible within the user-therapist-relationship. The conclusion points toward that music therapists must make complex considerations in work with social media to maintain a level of responsible practice. As a response to this conclusion, the implications for practice present: 1) a summary of legislation, 2) a list of complex considerations, and 3) recommendations for written consent, everything in context of music therapy and social media.
