A process that develops in the therapeutic relation between patient and therapist is interpersonal synchronization. This is the process, in which spontaneous rhythmic and temporal coordination of actions, emotions, thoughts and physiological aspects between two or more participants occurs. Interpersonal synchronization can be studied by examining paraverbal communication. This type of communication is expressed through different characteristics of voice use. The article links interpersonal synchronization to the affect consciousness model. This model claims that people´s affective life influences and controls how we relate to ourselves, the world around us, and that mental illness often comes from lack of affect consciousness and affect integration. This article examines if interpersonal synchronizations occur during therapy, and whether possible synchronization changes in accordance with higher affect integration. The study addresses one course of therapy, consisting of a patient diagnosed with depression and a therapist which was trained in the affect consciousness model. Interpersonal synchronization was studied by correlating the average speech rate measured in vocals per second, from manually segmented speaking sequences belonging to the patient and therapist. The speaking sequences was phase shifted to investigate who was leading a possible synchronization. Interpersonal synchronization was only found in the third session, where it is assumed that the therapist was leading the synchronization. No covariation was found between synchronization and the patient's level of affect consciousness. Synchronization between the patient and therapist seem to be a dynamic process, in which it is natural and convenient to move in and out of the synchronization.
