Abstract
Abstract
In October 2021, a significant debate arose concerning the use of the “N-word” in a lesson plan shared on social media. The lesson plan, which has slavery as its theme, originated from the University of Oslo. It was later used by a teacher at Randaberg Upper Secondary School in Norway. The teaching material was shared on the Instagram account of the anti-racist organization “Rasisme I Norge”, which translates to “Racism In Norway”. At the time of publication this account had over 30 000 followers. Local media outlets then proceeded to published articles regarding the accusations of racism.
Through a qualitative research design which takes data triangulation as its framework, this thesis investigates how the lesson plan gained such widespread attention on social media and in the local press. Data triangulation allows me to consider the perspectives of various actors involved in the debate, thereby providing deeper insight into the controversy.
The aim for this thesis is to gain deeper insights into how difficult and controversial topics can be taught in an increasingly diverse classroom. With smartphones and social media, the classroom has gradually become a more public space in recent years. When teaching sensitive topics such as slavery, more and more teachers find themselves on precarious ground.
