Truth and Horror: Lovecraftian horror and the Role Truth Plays Within It.

Abstract

I denne oppgaven vil jeg utforske temaene i Howard Phillips Lovecrafts historier, spesielt hvordan jakten på sannhet fører til galskap for hans karakterer. Lovecraft skildrer sannheten om menneskets plass i universet som urovekkende og mentalt destabiliserende, der oppdagelsen av at vi ikke er alene i kosmos ofte fører til galskap. Jeg har valgt å fokusere på tre av hans mest kjente historier: Dagon, The Call of Cthulhu og The Whisperer in Darkness, for å undersøke hvordan sannheten fungerer som en katalysator for galskap. Jeg vil bruke teoretiske rammeverk som Freuds The Uncanny, Kristevas The Powers of Horror og Nietzsches Truth and Lie in an Extra-Moral Sense for å belyse hvordan Lovecrafts skrekk, knyttet til forbudt kunnskap, reflekterer bredere filosofiske og psykoanalytiske ideer.

In this paper, I will explore the recurring themes in Howard Phillips Lovecraft's stories, particularly how the pursuit of truth often leads to madness for his characters. Lovecraft portrays the truth about humanity's place in the universe as unsettling and mentally destabilizing, with the revelation that we are not alone in the cosmos often leading to insanity. I have chosen to focus on three of his most famous stories: 'Dagon', 'The Call of Cthulhu', and 'The Whisperer in Darkness', to examine how truth acts as a catalyst for madness. I will use theoretical frameworks such as Freud's The Uncanny, Kristeva's The Powers of Horror, and Nietzsche's Truth and Lie in an Extra-Moral Sense to highlight how Lovecraft's horror, related to forbidden knowledge, reflects broader philosophical and psychoanalytic ideas.
