Ein attraktiv ørken. Ein analyse av Han-riket sin ekspansjon inn i Tarimbekkenet

Abstract

Denne avhandlinga skal ta for seg Han-riket(206fvt-220evt) sin ekspansjon inn i Tarimbekkenet. Målet med avhandlinga er å analysere motiva til Han-riket, som låg bak denne ekspansjonen og okkupasjonen av dette området. For å kunne svare på dette så blei det broten ned til tre faktorar, som skulle analyserast. Dette er den forsvars-strategiske, verdsoppfatninga og den økonomiske. Den forsvars-strategiske går ut på å sjå på om sikkerheita til Han-riket var trua. Vidare går det og på å sjå kva for fordelar, med tanke på dette, ekspansjonen inn i Tarimbekkenet gav Han-riket. Verdsoppfatning blir her delt inn i to kategoriar, korleis Han-riket oppfatta seg sjølv, og korleis dei ville at andre skulle oppfatte dei. Det blir i denne delen analysert i kva grad oppfatninga, av seg sjølv i sentrum, blei trua, og korleis dette var ein motiverande faktor bak ekspansjonen. Vidare ser avhandlinga her på korleis prestisje var viktig for Han-riket, og korleis Tarimbekkenet her spela ei rolle. Den økonomiske motiverande faktoren tar for seg kva for ressursar som det var i Tarimbekkenet. Ei vidare undersøking av kva Han-riket hadde interesse i blir og gjort her. I tillegg ser avhandlinga på kva for tiltak Han-riket gjorde for å sikre seg tilgang til dette. Avhandlinga kjem vidare til å låne nokon teoriar, rundt imperialisme, får forsking gjort rundt romersk imperialisme. Her kjem me til å nytta oss av den defensive og den aggressive tilnærminga. Dette er eit hjelpsamt analytisk verktøy, i analysen av Han-riket sin ekspansjon. Avhandlinga kjem i stor grad til å diskutere den tidlege perioden til Han-riket, frå opprettinga av riket i 206fvt til rundt år 50fvt. Dette er fordi det er i denne perioden den fyrste ekspansjonen skjedde og derfor også då ein kan finne motiva som låg bak ekspansjonen. Avhandlinga kjem også til å gå litt inn på erobringa av Tarimbekkenet i den austlege Han-perioden (25-220). I kjelder som omtalar denne perioden finn ein og nokre svar på kvifor Han-riket ekspanderte.

This thesis will be dealing with the Han-dynasty (206BC-220AC) and the expansion of the empire into the area called Tarim Basin. The goal of this thesis will to analyse the motives behind the expansion and occupation of the Tarim Basin, by the Han-dynasty. In order to explore these motives there is also a need to explore different aspects regarding the relationship between the Han-dynasty and the Tarim Basin. First, an understanding of the Tarim Basin in itself, is needed, in order to understand the relationship between these two areas. Secondly, an understanding of the interaction between the Han-dynasty and the Xiongnu, a nomadic people, is also required. This has to do with the conflict between these two powers, early in the history of the Han-dynasty. The Xiongnu were also in control of the Tarim Basin at this point. In order to determine the motivation behind the expansion of the Han-dynasty this thesis has narrowed its analysis down to three motivational factors. First, there is the defensive-strategy, which includes security issues of the Han and the possibility of establishing a better defence. With regard to this, the strategic importance of the Tarim Basin, will also be analysed. Secondly, the aspect regarding the Han empires sense of itself, as the centre of the world. The thesis will here explore how this was important for Han and how this worldview was challenged. The importance of prestige to the empire is also a part of this discussion. Thirdly, the economic factor will be analysed. Here the thesis will explore the resources that existed in the Tarim Basin and around. The thesis will then discuss what resources that were of interest to Han, in the Tarim Basin. The thesis will also analyse the measures that Han took, in order to secure access to these resources. This thesis will also borrow some theories, regarding imperialism, from research done, concerning, the Roman Empire. Here we will use the defensive and offensive approach to imperialism. This will be a helpful tool in the process of analysing the expansion of the Han Empire. The timeperiod, this thesis will be discussing, will mainly be the period from the start of the empire, in 206BC, and until Han established control over the Tarim Basin in 59BC. The thesis will also somewhat, draw on information from, and discuss, the later Han-period (25-220AD)
