Staging the suburban ideal in revolutionary road and the corrections. Performing and disrupting the “Performance of Normal”

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar for seg iscenesettelsen av familieidealet i amerikanske "suburbia" referert til som "the suburban ideal" i litterær fremstilling, i de amerikanske romanene Revolutionary Road skrevet av Richard Yates i 1961 og The Corrections av Jonathan Franzen fra 2001. Til tross for førti år mellom publikasjonene ser vi fremtredende likheter i måten å kritisere dette familieidealet. This thesis will look at the literary presentation of the staging of the suburban ideal" in the American novels Revolutionary Road written by Richard Yates in 1961 and The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen from 2001. Despite the forty-year gap between their publications, there are striking similarities in their critique of this family ideal. The thesis seeks to identify this critique explicitly through the lens of site-specificity" taken from the discourse of contemporary art, which I will use as chief approach in the literary analyses. In reading the prototype suburban home as a performance site", with focus on the living room, the chair, and the table as specific performance sites, we shall see the ways the novels critique the ideal by identifying what lies beneath the surface of its staging. Here, we identify the phenomenon of boredom and its effects, as well as sentimental dispossession" signifying the state of being impoverished by emotional investment in homeownership and the so-called good life." I argue that the staging of the suburban ideal demands a performance of normal" which in turn insists to be read as an institutional site (one of the three models introduced by Miwon Kwon in her book One Place After Another), but is challenged by the novels insistence on another lens to read the performance sites, namely the discursive site. This untraditional and expanding model takes the effects of boredom and sentimental dispossession" as sites," possible through a modification of the living room, the chair and the table. This modification occurs by means of the counterpart to the performance of normal," being abnormal performances," disturbing and interrupting the staging of the ideal. Each chapter explores the respective novels. Chapter 1, devoted to Yates' novel, shows how the staging of the ideal continues to live" in the prototype suburban home of literary presentation, though persistently interrupted. We will take the living room as a performance site and look at how the protagonists April and Frank Wheeler take different courses of direction: one conforms to the ideal, while the other resists conformity in a detachment from a place-bound identity. Chapter 2 examines the chair and the table as performance sites, offering an in-depth exploration of boredom as a phenomenon, and the way the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard reads the house, its rooms and interior as poetic images in the consciousness. Franzen's novel reverberates with the tendency to detach oneself from a place- bound identity, and at the bottom line we find a resistance to the staging of the ideal through a rather humoristic but serious depiction of two catastrophic family dinners.
