The overarching subject for the research has been: How can museums be used as an arena for the teaching of Norwegian? This Master's thesis, based on a series of articles, explores the area of the museum as an arena for the teaching of Norwegian. As Education Officer for the Department of Seafaring and Industry at Museum Stavanger - MUST, I have investigated how cultural heritage museums can be used for the teaching of Norwegian, preferably in the same ways as History has been. The thesis is based on the revised curriculum for Norwegian and the aims of the subject: «Norwegian is a key subject discipline with regard to cultural understanding, for communication, Bildung and developing an identity» The first three phrases are central in this thesis, which consists of three articles. The first article, "Cultural Understanding - Niels Waldemar's Journey. Meeting Culture in Texts» shows how archive material from museum collections can provide a basis for meetings with culture through texts. The archive material, which consisted of a Danish sailor's diary, a letter he wrote to his family, and a number of photographs, were formerly key items in an exhibition of archives for secondary school students at Stavanger Maritime Museum. The article shows how a recontextualising of archive material can provide the basis for a teaching unit which fits in to the Norwegian syllabus in the extra course Vg3 Preparation for Study. A central concept here is how the museum can use the theme of Norwegian teaching in the perspective of globalisation. The second article «Communication» treats how Norwegian can be a central discipline for communication. The article discusses how two teaching programs on so-called «iddisar» (= sardine can labels) can be used as examples for communication and the dimension of experience in teaching Norwegian, at the Norwegian Printing Museum. The program Labels as visual culture and a source of creativity, looks at labels as composite texts, and opportunity is provided for students to create their own labels on lithographic stones. The other program Labels as sales-promoting advertisements, focuses on, amongst other things, how the motifs on the labels in the early 1900s helped to reinforce traditional gender roles. The teaching provides for dialogues and analyses regarding today's media reality by comparing the past with the present. The third article, «Bildung» takes the subject of Norwegian as the key subject for enlightenment as shown through the teaching program «Maritim Norsk». The program provides the opportunity for examining the interface between archives, museum objects, and seamen both young and old, at the Stavanger Maritime Museum. It was carried out in the Autumn of 2013 with grade 10 and 11 students from the training ship M/S Gann, and retired seamen from the Stavanger Seaman's Association. One of the museum's main aims was to show how the museum could be used for Bildung. The article also discusses the problem of dropping out from higher secondary school, and to what extent the museum can be used as an arena for preventing dropping out.en_US
