Early attachment relationships are important for health and the development of stress coping mechanisms. Our aim with this review is to explore the existing literature on physiological correlates of avoidant attachment in children. We included 7 studies that highlighted avoidant attachment and different measures of physiological activation of stress. Attachment classification was measured using Strange situation (Ainsworth & Wittig, 1969), and physiological measures included different cardiologic variables and cortisol. Children with avoidant attachment demonstrates inconsistency in their pattern of physiological activation during the strange situation when compared to other attachment styles. Overall, the results are divided with regards to physiological activation during the strange situation. Some studies find an association between avoidant attachment and low activation, and others find avoidant attachment to be associated with higher activation compared to the other attachment styles. Limitations and implications for further research and clinical practice will be discussed.en_US
