A modern diesel engine meets stringent demands in efficiency and emissions by adapting advanced technology. The technological advancements include the fuel injection system where advanced micro processing and fast actuators inject exact volumes of fuel, at varying pressure and timing in terms of the engines operating point. This thesis explains the programming and operational aspects when HVL’s laboratory diesel engine is rebuilt with a modern electronic common rail fuel injection system. The advanced software and hardware used in the rebuild enables the injection to be programmed with a main goal of reduced soot emissions and smoother combustion. Initial results show very good tendencies in terms of emissions and mechanical loading. Additionally, the rebuild has given the engine operator the ability to control the key injection parameters in real-time, while monitoring the results with advanced indicating systems. By this, the laboratory engine has gained an important aspect which will improve the teaching and the results from research on alternative fuels.en_US
