"PP-rådgiveres opplevelse av makt og kommunikasjon i samarbeidet med brukernes foreldre". En kvalitativ studie av PP-rådgiveres opplevelse av foreldresamarbeid

Abstract

The project “The way PP-councilor experience the use of power and communication in cooperation with the caretaker/parent of the person with needs” is about cooperation. It is about the cooperation between the Pedagogic Psychological Service and the caretaker. The purpose of this project was to get a better enlightenment of how the PP-Councilor experiences cooperation with the caretakers. What do they see as a good cooperation, and what can lead to challenges along the way? A qualitative research design has been used to explore the research question, and five councilors who work in the PP- service has been interviewed through the process. These councilors work at two different offices, which offer Pedagogic Psychological Service, in Norway. The interview-group all have different grade of education, but they are all employed as councilors, at Pedagogic Psychological Service. A few of them were psychologists, and some were specialized in pedagogics. They have been working at the Pedagogic Psychological Service between 6 months, and 36 years, with different responsible areas along the way. By using the “theory-part” of this project, I would like to enlighten the main aspects that came out of the analytic part of processing my interviews. This founding’s are further discussed in the “discussion-chapter”. In the part of theory, I have looked into parental cooperation, and what that could affect the quality of the needed collaboration. I have chosen to focus on communication, with special attention to the use of interpreters, and also then the use of power, empowerment, and social control. The results show that the PP- councilors experienced that parental-cooperation is among those tasks they enjoy the most at work. The participants understanding of the basic elements in a good cooperating process, is resistant of what is to be found in theory. Communication, language and power plays a central role in a cooperative process. This developing process of cooperation determines the various degrees of help and support the user can expect to receive. It is found that they have the most difficulties due to problems with communication. Communication problems is most frequently seen in cases where the parents/caretaker has another nationality, and there is a limitation, or lack of a common language. This is closely linked to the challenges when using an interpreter as a "communication-tool", and the background of cultural differences. The results emphasize that the pp- councilors don’t want to identify themselves with the concept of power. They have however realized that there sometimes is used power in cooperation relations, without themselves doing it knowingly in the process.

Prosjektet «PP-rådgiveres opplevelse av makt og kommunikasjon i samarbeidet med brukernes foreldre» handler om samarbeid. Det handler om samarbeid mellom Pedagogisk psykologisk tjeneste og brukernes foresatte. Målet med prosjektet var å få en dypere innsikt i hvordan PP-rådgiverne opplever samarbeidet med brukernes foreldre. Hva de opplever som et godt samarbeid og hva som kan skape utfordringer i samarbeidet. For å besvare problemstillingen har jeg benyttet meg av kvalitativ forskningsmetode og intervjuet fem PP-rådgivere ved to ulike kontor hos Pedagogisk psykologisk tjeneste i Norge. Intervjupersonene har ulik utdannelsesbakgrunn, men er alle ansatt i Pedagogisk psykologisk tjeneste som rådgivere. Noen er utdannet som psykolog og noen som spesialpedagoger, og de har arbeidet i PP-tjenesten mellom 6 måneder og 36 år med ulike ansvarsområder. Gjennom oppgavens teoridel ønsker jeg å belyse hovedfunnene som kom frem gjennom analyseprosessen, og som videre er trukket frem i diskusjonskapittelet. I teorikapittelet har jeg sett på foreldresamarbeid og hva som kan påvirke kvaliteten på samarbeidet. Jeg har tatt for meg kommunikasjon med hovedvekt på kommunikasjon via tolk og avslutningsvis makt, avmakt og sosial kontroll. Resultatet viser at PP-rådgiverne opplever at foreldresamarbeid er blant de arbeidsoppgavene de trives best med, og deltakernes oppfattelse av grunnleggende elementer for et godt samarbeid samstemmer med teori på området. Kommunikasjon, språk og makt spiller sentrale roller i samarbeidet og er avgjørende for hvordan samarbeidet arter seg og hvilken hjelp og støtte det kan resultere i for brukerne. Det kommer frem at flere av PP-rådgiverne opplever at eventuelle utfordringer i samarbeidet oppstår grunnet kommunikasjonsproblemer, som hovedsakelig oppstår i de sakene der brukernes foreldre er av utenlandsk opprinnelse og de har lite eller ingen form for felles språk. Dette er knyttet til utfordringer til bruk av tolk som kommunikasjonsverktøy og partenes ulike kulturelle bakgrunn. Resultatet viser at PP-rådgiverne ikke ønsker å identifisere seg med begrepet makt, men at flertallet av deltakerne er klar over at de har makt i samarbeidsrelasjonen, uten at den bevisst brukes i samarbeidsrelasjonen
