Sammendrag
This study aims to capture the importance of mastery and coping in addiction treatment and combine it with the user perspective and music therapy. The study explores music therapy in addiction treatment at a detoxification unit for women. The data material consists of interviews with three women in a detoxification unit and a research log from the music therapy group sessions that helps my understanding of the data. The music therapy group was created by myself and a fellow student. The focus is on how the participants think of and experience mastery and coping in the music therapy group, in addition to how they experience participating in this group. Theoretical perspectives including mastery, coping, self-efficacy and empowerment are key elements that informs my discussion section. Findings in the study include the perception of mastery, how the participants experienced the music therapy group and mastery in the sessions. I will discuss participation in music therapy as a basis for mastery, music therapy as a prerequisite for change, the user perspective as a basis for empowerment and music therapy as a coping strategy. The thesis also addresses further implications for practice and research.
