The topic of homework is widely discussed in the society, and the points of view are often argued either for homework or against any homework at all. Both arguments are supported by research, but there has been little research on the topic of homework itself. My study is a small contribution to fill this gap. My basic assumption is that homework can be of instructional value, and the question is what kind of homework might contribute positively to learning? My report is focused on this main issue: How can homework in Norwegian language support metacognition and reflection? I started by asking myself how can classroom conversation be a way to follow up the homework task? I then asked myself what kind of homework the pupils can be assigned to be prepared for a good classroom conversation? I developed these research questions:  How can classroom conversation as a homework follow-up support metacognition and reflection?  How can teachers define homework tasks which can be openers for good classroom conversation? I did my study among three tenth grade classes at the school where I work. The pupils and their Norwegian teachers were my informers. I gathered data by focus group interviews, surveys and by teachers providing me with their logs. The theoretical backdrop consists of three parts: Literature about homework theories, literacy and conversation as dialogical classroom practice. My conclusion is that classroom conversation can be an effective way of doing homework follow-up, but it takes time for the pupils to develop into competent and confident conversation contributors. A condition for providing instructive homework follow-up is that the pupils are given relevant tasks as homework. The homework is reading individually and independently during a reading phase. The pre-reading phase takes place in the classroom. This phase provides the teacher with the opportunity and moments to create reading engagement, and to clarify goals and contents of the reading. Coherence between activities during lessons and homework tasks enables the teacher’s efforts in supporting the pupils’ motivation for homework. An interaction between various factors in the classroom creates engaged readers. The pupils achieve the best academic learning by participating in a learning environment offering instructions on strategy use, focus on creating interest and on developing knowledge.en_US
