The primary aim of this paper was to conceptually replicate the findings of the literature review of Agrawal et al., (2004) on the relationship between attachment style and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). A secondary aim was to explore variables that potentially mediate the relationship between attachment and BPD. A total of 20 empirical studies that examined the relationship between either categorical or dimensional attachment styles and borderline personality disorder were reviewed. The studies utilised a variety of both diagnostic and attachment measures, and thus limited the possibility of drawing immediate conclusions from the review. In all the studies, however, people with BPD had a higher probability of being categorised with an Insecure attachment style than a Secure attachment style. Among the different types of Insecure attachment styles, the Disorganized and Preoccupied attachment categories were the most frequent styles for interview measures. For self-report measures, the most frequent attachment categories were Fearful and Preoccupied. The attachment dimensions, anxiety and avoidance, were moderately correlated with BPD, but with the strongest correlation coefficients between Attachment-Anxiety and BPD. Furthermore, rejection sensitivity, negative self-beliefs, mentalization, metacognitive mastery, emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, trait negative affect and self-other boundaries mediated the relationship between attachment style and BPD. In conclusion, the attachment styles identified to be the most frequent for people with BPD were the same as found by Agrawal et al. (2004). The correlations between attachment styles and BPD were, on the other hand, weaker in our review, indicating that other factors could elaborate our understanding of the BPD diagnosis.en_US
