Abstract

This thesis revolves around music therapy with female inmates. The aim of the study is to examine how female inmates experience music therapy while being incarcerated in a prison which also houses male prisoners. The study uses a qualitative approach, where female inmates were interviewed in prison through a semi structured interview. A thematic analysis was used to analyze the interviews where the results revealed two main themes. These themes are women’s prison conditions and music significance. Each of these main themes have three sub themes. The sub themes for women’s prison conditions are everyday life, contact with male inmates and differential treatment. The sub themes for music significance are resources, motivation and highlights. In general, little research exists regarding music therapy with female inmates in Norway. Thus, this research is considered relevant. The results show that female inmates are subject to differential treatment in mixed prisons, where they have less offers and opportunities than male inmates. The music therapy offer constitutes a highlight for the female inmates in their daily life, where they experience positive emotions and motivation to continue with music after release from prison. Thus, music therapy constitutes a valuable offer for women who are serving time in the same prison as men.
