This thesis focuses on inmates who participate in higher education during atonement, where the purpose is to gain insight into the inmates’ perceptions of partaking in higher education as part of a life change. It has been important to highlight the personal experiences of inmates, as well as experiences related to various aspects of partaking in higher education during atonement. This is something that the project’s research issue is characterized by: What thoughts and perceptions do inmates have about engaging in higher education as a part of their rehabilitation process? Research on this topic from a Norwegian viewpoint is minimal, which makes the research issue both important and relevant, and I hope this project can be a positive contribution. The research carried out has a hermeneutical phenomenological approach with a constructivist science theoretical anchorage, where the main focus lies on the research participants lived lives as seen from their own perspective. In the process of collecting data, I have used the qualitative method semi structured qualitative interviews, to get good experience-based descriptions from people who have experienced what it’s like to participate in higher education during atonement. The projects findings show that inmates experience higher education as positive and important part of their rehabilitation process, and they believe that higher education will give them better conditions for living a life without crime. It’s also emphasized that higher education will lead to more and better opportunities after their release from prison, especially in the labor market. The project’s discussion shows that participation in higher education provides a fertile ground for personal change in inmates, where environmental change and dialogue with other students and employees at both educational institutions and the school department in the prison are central. Inmates encounter several barriers related to partaking in higher education while serving time, where limited access to PC and internet, funding and little information about higher education opportunities are highlighted as the largest. These are barriers that have major consequences in relation to the implementation of the inmates’ studies, and in a worst-case scenario, it may lead to inmates having to end their educational journey. In the context of the projects results, these barriers are very unfortunate as higher education, to a large extent, can positively affect the future of inmates.en_US
