Background: Information exchange between healthcare levels is seen upon as a critical factor to contribute to continuity of patient care. Authorities point out that the primary communication form should take place electronically. Introduction of electronic messaging is in progress throughout the country and intends to improve and facilitate continuous collaboration between nursing- and care-services in the municipality, GP’s and hospitals. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to see if homecare units and short term- and rehabilitation wards in nursing homes have managed to normalize the use of electronic messages. These two nursing- and care services are those who receive most discharge patients from hospitals with extensive need for nursing- and care-services. Material: Document analysis and interview data from three head nurses in different nursing homes and three group leaders in various homecare units in the municipality of Bergen. Methods: Case study with individual interviews. The analysis is categorized and analyzed in the light of Normalization Process Theory (NPT). Result: The result shows that there is great variation in the use of electronic messaging between homecare units and short term- and rehabilitation wards in nursing homes. Conclusion: By using NPT as a theoretical framework for the analysis, this may help to clarify which factors are deficient where normalization degree is small.en_US
