Background: A careful examination of the oral mucosa of the patient is essential in dentistry. It is important that dentists are capable of distinguishing variations of normal anatomy of the oral mucosa from clinically similar pathological lesions. Objective: Our aim was to gather information regarding the most common normal anatomic changes of the oral mucosa, and describe how these changes can be distinguished from clinically similar pathologic lesions. A description of the characteristics of a complete patient examination, and a description of different diagnostic methods are also included in this thesis. Biopsy as a diagnostic method is especially emphasized. Methods: The thesis is a review of the literature available on this topic. We have used the database PubMed. The thesis is primarily based on medical-odontological scientific papers and textbooks. Some parts of the thesis are based on knowledge from the dental studies; clinical instruction, lectures and notes, together with common knowledge on the subject. Results:The normal anatomic alterations of the oral mucosa that we describe are: leukoedema, Fordyce’s spots, pigmented alterations, enlarged ductus parotideus, alterations of the tongue, alterations related to lymphoid tissue, oral varices, linea alba and retrocuspid papilla. In general, it was difficult to find information regarding some of the normal variants. It appears that there is limited research on this subject, compared to available literature of pathologic lesions. Conclusion: Knowledge about normal variants of normal oral mucosa is important in order to distinguish them from pathologic lesions. For obvious reasons there is not much research done on normal variants of oral mucosa, compared with pathologic lesions. We have done a careful description of different normal variants, and listed the most relevant differential diagnoses; and thereafter we have suggested how these can be distinguished in a table. We hope our thesis may be useful for other dental students as well as for dentists in their clinical daily practice.en_US
