This master thesis addresses the issue of task influence on text quality within writing assessment. According to the normative role of the field of language testing, it is indeed meaningful to speak in terms of text quality, and by referring to The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment (2001) and to the construct and the rating scales of the two Norwegian large-scale language tests Test i norsk - høyre nivå and Trinn 3-eksamen, I show that text quality at a higher level of performed writing skills can be linked to the ability to argue. A model of rhetorical text analysis is applied as a suitable methodological approach to my investigation, allowing an operationalization of text quality linked to argumentation in terms of what I will call argumentative text structures. Three hypothesises on the task-based influence on the rhetorical text structure are tested, one on the discursive generating effect of implicitly formulated statements in writing tasks (H1), another on how explicitly formulated rhetorical instructions in writing tasks will generate similar text structures (H2) and the third on the discursive (as opposed to argumentative) generating effect of the instructional verb discuss' (H2a), and to test these hypothesises I analyze six pairs of essays where each pair consists of two texts produced by the same candidate writing two different tasks. The results are inconclusive and neither of the three hypothesises are fully supported and it is difficult to draw conclusions concerning the effect of the task variable on text quality, partly due to the multitude of variables possibly affecting the results. The inconclusiveness of the hypothesis testing is assumed to be due to methodological aspects of the investigation, and I extensively discuss both the limitation of the data itself and the weaknesses of the analytical approach provided by the rhetorical text analysis. Despite the lack of conclusive results, I would still argue that my investigation might provide some useful insights into the field of writing assessment concerning both the influence of the task variable on the construct validity of a writing test in a more general test theoretical perspective, but also more specifically how the effect of for instance explicitly formulated rhetorical instructions or statements in writing tasks link to the request for the candidate to demonstrate argumentative writing skills in a test essay.en_US
