This thesis seeks to examine and discuss youths' formation of meaning in modern society, and the relationship between meaning formation and mental health. Humanisticexistential theorists such as Kirk Schneider, Rollo May and Erich Fromm are discussed in relation to a developmental psychological understanding, to try to shed light on the formation of meaning among young people in modern society. Through these theorists we argue for the importance of a capacity for humility, reverence and wonder, myths to sort through and make sense of a highly stimulating reality, and to be present through who one is rather than what possesions one has. Contemporary phenomena such as individualism, freedom of choice, consumer culture and the Internet as a social arena are discussed in respect to youths need for meaning, and in light of the existential factors mentioned above. Towards the end of the thesis experience consumption, alienated activity and lack of existential freedom are discussed as expressions of the relationship between meaning formation and youths mental health.en_US
