Kaos og orden : En lesning av visuelle og postmodernistiske nedslag i Simon Strangers Mnem

Abstract

This dissertation is a reading of Simon Strangers Mnem (2008) with emphasis on the relationship between architecture and literature. The first chapter presents my choice of author, Mnem's reception and the approach, issues and methodological considerations of the dissertation. The introduction shows that Strangers' novel seems chaotic and several aspects of the text invite the reader to different apprehensions. My dissertation therefore extends to a number of fields, the coverage of these and the links between them in the text. I have based my thesis upon several theories to illuminate different bearings of the novel. How Mnem relates to a postmodernistic aesthetics is the underlying theme for my dissertation, where I describe modernism and postmodernism in a literary and architectural context. Within literature I discuss the concept of irony, the modernistic concept of totality and the novel as an expression of performative practices. Assumed theories of architecture are new monumentality and how the novel gives an account of the concept of space. The principal part of the dissertation is a discussion of narrative, architectural and postmodernistic impacts discovered in Mnem. The novel's narrative and architectural structure shows that Mnem finds itself in an intermediate position between modernism and postmodernism, but it is also a dialogue between several literary and architectural traditions. Although the novel has many postmodernistic characteristics, Mnem does not reject the modernistic tradition. Some of the aspects of the text are irony, parody, nostalgia and melancholy. My hypothesis is that Strangers novel is a nostalgic and melancholic homage to other literary and architectural inspirations. However, the analysis shows that the novel's narrators use irony to distance themselves from these. Finally, in the chapter Order in Chaos" I summarize the novel's continuous alteration between closure, postponement and duration.

Denne avhandlingen er en lesning av Simon Strangers roman Mnem (2008) med vekt på forholdet mellom arkitektur og litteratur. Det første kapitlet presenterer mitt valg av forfatter, resepsjonshistorien av forfatterskapet og avhandlingens fremgangsmåte, problemstilling og metodiske vurderinger. Innledningen viser at Strangers romanprosjekt virker kaotisk og mange aspekter ved teksten inviterer til ulike nedslag. Min avhandling strekker seg derfor over flere felt og jeg beveger meg mellom disse lagene for å avdekke forbindelseslinjene mellom dem. Jeg har tatt utgangspunkt i flere teorier for å belyse forskjellige sider av romanen. Hvordan Mnem forholder seg til en postmodernistisk estitikk er underliggende spørsmål for oppgaven, og jeg forklarer modernisme og postmodernisme i en litterær og arkitektonisk kontekst. Innen litteratur tar jeg for meg ironibegrepet, det modernistiske totalitetsbegrepet og Mnem som uttrykk for performative praksiser. Arkitekturteorier som også legges til grunn er ny monumentalitet og hvordan romanen fremstiller rom. Avhandlingens hovedlesninger er en diskusjon av narrative, arkitektoniske og postmodernistiske nedslag i Mnem. Romanens narrative og arkitektoniske oppbygning vitner om at Mnem stiller seg i en mellomposisjon med hensyn til modernisme og postmodernisme, men er også i dialog med flere litterære og arkitektoniske tradisjoner. Selv om romanen har mange postmodernistiske karakteristikker, avviser ikke Mnem den modernistiske tradisjonen. Stikkord for lesningene er ironi, parodi, nostalgi og melankoli. Min hypotese er at Strangers romanprosjekt er en nostalgisk og melankolsk hyllest til litterære og arkitektoniske forelegg. Analysen viser imidlertid at fortellerne i romanen bruker ironi for å distansere seg fra disse. Avslutningsvis oppsummerer jeg, i kapitlet "Orden i kaoset", romanens paradoksale bevegelse mellom avslutning, utsettelse og varighet.
