Background: Headache is the most expressed suffering in childhood. The suffering can have consequences for children and adolescents' wellbeing on several areas of life, and it can lead to reduces life quality. Studies conducted until now conclude that cognitive behaviour therapy is the most effective treatment. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to shed light on what handling strategies children and adolescents with chronic tension-type headache use. To identify and describe active handling strategies can be of importance for us as therapists and for the patients themselves. Awareness in this area can contribute to children and adolescents' knowledge about how to manage their suffering in a more functional way, and thus better their life situation. Problem definition: What handling strategies do children and adolescents with chronic tension-type headache use in everyday life? Material and method: A qualitative research design is used in form of a semi-structured qualitative in-depth interview of four strategically chosen boys and girls between 12 and 18 years of age. The data is analysed in accordance with Giorgi's phenomenological approach. Results: Several handling strategies where used by the adolescents. In order to handle headache, establishing daily routines with meals and sleep seem essential. To lie down and rest was also mentioned as a handling strategie. To work out and take things more at ease seem to be other strategies which were employed. Conclusion: Several handling strategies were identified in the study. In order to optimise the treatment, the physiotherapist and manual therapist also can make use of cognitive behaviour-and handling strategies, in addition to the conventional treatment, and thus support and encourage the children and adolescents' abilities in identifying and consciously make use of their own handling strategies and skills.en_US
