Urbanism in ancient Arcadia
Abstract
In this thesis I look at city planning and residential architecture in the region of ancient Arcadia on the Peloponnesian peninsula in Greece. I look at seven Arcadian cities, Kyparissia, Stymphalos, Lavda, Tegea, Megalopolis, Asea and Mantineia, focusing on remains of houses and signs of planned street grids. I then compare the material from these sites with what is known from three well explored Greek cities, Olynthus, Priene and Delos. Through this comparison I try to form an outline of the development of Arcadian cities compared to those elsewhere in Greece.
