This master thesis deals with female names in Røldal, Suldal and Vinje parishes in the 1800s. These communities lie sheltered by high mountains, and especially Røldal and Vinje has been isolated most of the year in earlier times due to natural conditions. In winter, the contact with other villages was minimal, but during the summer these areas had much contact with nearby villages. Also, Røldal was an annex parish to Suldal until the year 1859. What I wanted to find out was whether, and to what extent, female names became modernized in these areas. In addition, I would investigate if the contact between communities may have led to the expansion of names and name forms, and if the female names in Røldal had more similarities to South-Western Norway or Telemark. My hypotheses were that the names in these villages were traditional, and that the modernization in the 1800s was weak. I also suspected there would be a difference between the villages, and that Suldal was the place with the most modernization in names. The sources for the investigation were the 1801 and 1900 censuses, and I have mainly used parish registers while working on double names. The names in these villages are stable. From 1801 to 1900 there are several new and more modern names in these parishes. Suldal gets the most new names, then comes Røldal and finally Vinje. The most popular names in 1900 are mostly the same as 1801 in all parishes. The new names are low frequent, often with one or two occurences. Suldal differs from the other two places regarding the occurrences of more modern names, and the use of double names. Vinje and Røldal are still traditional in 1900, and there are fewer modern names to find here than in Suldal. Regarding whether Røldal has more similar names to the west coast or Telemark, the conclusion is that the names were typical West-Norwegian in 1801, although we can find several names that had their core area in Telemark. In 1900, Røldal is more similar to Vinje and other mountain villages between east and west in Norway than Suldal. South-Western names are still dominating, but since the modernization has not gotten any breakthrough in the name material, Røldal is different from villages further out towards the coast.en_US
