Stø - Et fiskevær i endring. En studie av et lokalsamfunn i spenningsfeltet mellom modernitet og kollektiv orientering

Abstract

Denne masteroppgaven tar en nærmere titt på hvordan moderne og globale prosesser innvirker på et fiskevær i Vesterålen. Den kretser rundt en drøfting av den moderne individualismen og globale orientering. Teksten retter oppmerksomheten mot hvordan innbyggerne på plassen forholder seg til de stedlige endringene, og søker innsikt i deres tanker, refleksjoner og handlingsstrategier. Gjennom en analyse av deres livsverden, argumenteres det for at innbyggerne har en tydelig samfunnsansvarlig holdning og kollektiv orientering, der de både tenker og handler ut fra hva de mener vil være det beste for stedet. Det er også ut fra dette perspektivet de forstår plassens næringssituasjon, og i den forbindelse vektlegger de fiskerinæringens avgjørende betydning for lokalsamfunnet. Ikke bare er denne nøringen viktig som inntektskilde - den anses også som en forutsetning for andre arbeidsområder. Særlig turismen plasseres inn i dette avhengighetsforholdet, og den kollektive forståelsen blant informantene er at reiselivets eksistens hviler i fiskeriets hender.

This thesis takes a closer look at the implications of globalization and modernity in a small fishing village in Vesterålen. It focuses on the local inhabitants' thoughts, perspectives and actions in their response to the cultural and social changes which are taking place within their local community. The text argues that these individuals in many ways have a pre-modern orientation, where they reflect upon the various changes from a collective, community based point of view. Through a detailed description of the inhabitants' life world, the thesis seeks to uncover how their attention is directed towards maintaining the local community. It also seeks to unveil how the inhabitants' actions are mainly driven by a goal to establish foundations for a beneficial place development in the future. In this context, the local fishing activity appears as the most propitious, and thereby a highly important employment field. By reason of its contribution to both economic and social welfare, it is considered to be a prerequisite for other aspects of the society as well - and in particular for the local tourism. This conception entails a particular viewpoint amongst the inhabitants, where they understand the tourism industry as a field completely dependent on the fishing activities' continued existence.
