Kommunikasjon i det korte møtet mellom pasient og bioingeniør i forbindelse med blodprøvetaking : en kvalitativ undersøkelse

Abstract

Studiens hensikt er å få ny kunnskap som kan bidra til at bioingeniører blir mer bevisst på hvordan de møter pasienter, slik at kvaliteten på det korte møtet kan bli bedre. Med utgangspunkt i studiens tittel, Kommunikasjon i det korte møtet mellom pasient og bioingeniør i forbindelse med blodprøvetaking, har jeg undersøkt to problemstillinger; Hvordan opplever pasienter møter med bioingeniører? Hvordan opplever bioingeniører møtene med pasienter? For å få svar på problemstillingene har jeg benyttet det kvalitative forskningsintervjuet som metode. Intervju av seks inneliggende pasienter, samt tre yrkesaktive bioingeniører, har funnet sted på et middels stort sykehus i Norge. Tre av pasientene er menn, og tre er kvinner. Bioingeniørene er kvinner. De har mange års yrkeserfaring. Jeg har benyttet to ulike intervjuguider som hjelpemidler under intervjuene, en intervjuguide for pasienter og en annen for bioingeniører. For å komme frem til studiens resultater har jeg benyttet ”ad hoc meningsgenerering” som analysemetode. Hvordan pasienter opplever møter med bioingeniører, og hvordan bioingeniører opplever møtene med pasienter, kommer an på bioingeniørers tid, deres dagsform, samt hvilke holdninger de har til seg selv, til sitt arbeid, til pasienter og til deres situasjon. Det kommer også an på pasientene, deres forventninger til bioingeniører, og om pasientene har spesielle ønsker i forbindelse med blodprøvetakingen. Spørsmålet er i hvilken grad bioingeniører kan velge hva de vil engasjere seg i. Som mennesker kan vi behandle pasienter som subjekter eller objekter. Utfordringen er å være bevisst hvilken makt og hvilke muligheter vi har i menneskelige møter.

The purpose of this study is to acquire new knowledge that can contribute to the medical laboratory technologists being more conscious as to how they meet patients, in order to improve the quality of this brief meeting. Based on the study’s title, Communication in the short meeting between patient and medical laboratory technologist in conjunction with phlebotomy, I have investigated two questions; How do patients perceive meetings with medical laboratory technologists? How do medical laboratory technologists perceive meetings with the patients? To answer these questions I have used the “qualitative research interview" as a method. Six hospitalised patients and three medical laboratory technologists have been interviewed at an medium-size hospital in Norway. Three of the patients are men and three are women. The medical laboratory technologists are all women with many years’ work experience. I have utilized two different interview guides during the interviews, one interview guide for the patients and another for the medical laboratory technologists. In order to arrive at the results of the study I have used "ad hoc meaning generation" for the analysis. The way in which patients perceive their encounters with medical laboratory technologists, and the way in which medical laboratory technologists perceive their encounters with patients, depends on the amount of time available on the side of the technologists, their physical and mental condition, as well as their attitudes to themselves, to their work, to the patients and to the patients’ situation. It also depends on the patients, their expectations in relation to medical laboratory technologists, and whether the patients have specific wishes or requirements in conjunction with the phlebotomy. The question is to what extent medical laboratory technologists can choose what to engage themselves in. As humans we can treat patients as subjects or as objects. The challenge lies in being conscious of our power and possibilities in encounters with other humans.
