This master thesis looks at how people with physical disabilities have been portrayed, and is portrayed, in art. When Alison Lapper Pregnant was exhibited on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square, the artwork opened up for a discussion about beauty, ideals and norms for the human body. Marc Quinn uses the sculpture series The Complete Marbles to investigate how we perceive the human body and physical beauty, and how we perceive the fragmented traces from antiquity. Quinn created The Complete Marbles in 1999-2000, inspired by the Greek and Roman fragments that he had seen in the British Museum. The sculptures appearance are similar to the fragments from antiquity, however Quinn chose to do The Complete Marbles in a neoclassical style. Alison Lapper Pregnant is part of this sculpture series, and after it was exhibited on Trafalgar Square, it became an artwork in its own right. As public art the artwork can shed light on how and why portrayal of people with physical disabilities have been lacking and limiting. To discuss this I shall look at the term “the abject” by Julia Kristeva and “the uncanny” by Sigmund Freud. I shall use commercials as example of a contemporary beauty ideal and compare them with Greek and Roman sculptures.en_US
